I love anything chai! Putting together your own chai spice mix is a real treat. You’ll have your very own powdered spice blend that’s warm, comforting, and easy to add to all your favorite recipes, from scones and pies to smoothies and lattes. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can start with whole spices and grind them yourself—but starting with ground spices works great too. I will say using fresh, whole spices really gives it that something extra—because the volatile oils from the plants will be released while you work. You’ll be happy to have this versatile spice blend on hand in your pantry!

Chai Spice Mix Recipe

Grinding your own fresh, whole spices really gives this recipe a little something extra—because the volatile oils from the plants will be released while you work.

Ingredients

Ground Chai Spice Mixture
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • In a bowl, combine all of the spices. Mix to combine. Store in the pantry until ready to use.
Whole Chai Spice Mixture*
  • 1 tablespoon green whole cardamom
  • 3 whole star anise pods
  • 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 cinnamon stick, broken in pieces
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 7 allspice berries
  • ½ teaspoon white peppercorns

Instructions

  1. Using a chef’s knife, coarsely chop the cardamom and star anise pods. You only need to do a coarse chop to get the process going. Place in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add all the additional ingredients in the bowl with the cardamom and star anise and mix to combine.
  3. Working in batches, place the mixture in either a spice grinder or process by hand using a mortar and pestle. Store the ground spices in the pantry until ready to use.

Notes

*This recipe can be done with a mortar and pestle, but I favor using a spice grinder. I have two grinders in my kitchen: one for spices and one for coffee beans. The spice grinder is also great for making lavender and vanilla sugar.
